Preparing for your Online Session
Where to Set Up
If you are doing pre-recorded yoga sessions with me, you’ll just need a space large enough for your mat where you can extend your arms out to the sides and up over your head comfortably. Set up your viewing device (smart phone, tablet, laptop) in a location where you can see and hear our class. If we are doing live training sessions together, I’ll want to see and hear you too! Find a location where your device can see your full body - head to toe - in standing, seated and reclining positions. We can use FaceTime, Skype, Messenger – or one of the more popular social apps like WhatsApp or Viber. We’ll talk beforehand so we can work out more details before our class.
What to Wear
Just wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that won’t bunch up or get in the way as you bend, stretch and roll around on your mat :-) Avoid clothing that is exceptionally baggy or exceptionally tight. Bare feet are perfect, but if you want to keep your tootsies warm, choose a flexible foot cover with a non-skid sole (“sticky feet” socks, flexible tennis shoes, etc.).What to Bring
Yoga Mat
You don’t need a mat if you are going to do yoga on a non-skid surface like grass or non-skid flooring. The mat serves to provide some cushioning for your body, plus a sturdy, non-slippery surface for your feet.
If you’re looking to buy one - there are so many choices! I’d suggest an inexpensive, basic mat to start with (you can buy one for ~$10 at Walmart). Once you get serious about yoga, you may search for a particular kind of mat to suit your personal desires, such as extra cushiony, extra sticky, or eco friendly. I wanted a super non-skid mat that was also eco friendly and biodegradable, so I’m currently using Barefoot Yoga’s Eco Mat, but it’s more expensive and you don’t need to start with a specialty mat like this one.
Accessories
You do not need any accessories to start with. Makeshift accessories can be created using pillows, towels, books, etc. If you find yourself constantly looking for a particular perfect pillow, that’s the time to explore the myriad of options available for purchase. Currently, I use simple high-density foam yoga blocks when I want to do Supported Bridge Pose or other bending postures, but it's up to you. My advice is to start doing yoga in a simple way, see where you would like a bit of extra help, and if you decide to purchase a particular item, explore your options online prior to making the investment.
Water Bottle
It’s always nice to pause for a little sip of fresh water now and again!
